you can draw planes using pencil (by hatching instead of outlining) but it's easy to get lost in the chaos (hard to stick to consistent use of a limited value palette).
Trying different materials is sometimes the key to discovering what approach fits you best.

By the way you can use conte for your live stuff, it doesn't slow you down really, it can even be a lot faster then pencil. It's not that different from using art stix and a lot of people use those for their live stuff (flats for instance). The only downside to conte (which is simular to pastel but harder) is that it smears, you have to spray it to fix it to the page. Hairspray can do the trick although it might leave spots, art shops sell stuff that has a much finer spray then hairspray but that is more expensive.

Went a step further. I haven't had time with the schedule I am on at present to complete this.

Thug - what IS that style you use to get that glazed/glassy effect? i find it very distracting... is it the liquify tool? i've never used it myself

Hi Super,

I have no idea how I get that, I just pratt about looking for likeness with shapes without worrying about colour, style and all the finishing stuff. I don't use any addins like Liquify etc. all is from memory, no cut and paste and all the other 'so-called cheat methods'. I pride myself with "raw failure' and the odd raw success.

This is only a stage where I'm looking for likeness nothing more. Whatever the appearance of this stage is of no consequence as colour will be altered and tightened.
Here I have the likeness I wanted...so 50% complete. .

To explain my digital method....

Not the same as my analogue method. With digital I start with a blob of colour and then push it about, adding a little colour as I go, the difficulty of this method keeps me entertained. Once happy with likeness I then refine the image.

I seldom use a pre-drawing. With acrylics in the real world I work fast, again I never use a pre-drawing. I just paint. With Acrylics what appears on the canvas is planned in my mind (there is only one stroke and it is correct), however with digital I lose the 'preordained' shape or line because I can easily change options...so in a sense I get lost. It is actually bad for me this digital stuff...doubt creeps in. But I like the challenge of this digital medium. I shall post some of my acrylics one of these days when I tire of digital.
